Lower Mainland activity roundup: spring 2024

A listing of some of Vancouver’s best summer happenings.

Arts and culture

A folk music tradition
The Vancouver Folk Fest is a summer staple. Hosted at Jericho Beach, this year’s three-day event runs from July 19 to 21 and features more than 40 of the world’s top contemporary and traditional folk bands.

Fringe Festival
The Vancouver Fringe Festival celebrates its 40th season with a lineup that includes emerging talent and well-known global artists pushing the limits on comedy, dance, spoken word and more. The festival runs from September 5 to 15 at theatres across this city. Check out more than 65 live, barrier-breaking performances.

Comedy al fresco
Laugh along to the likes of MAD TV’s Bobby Lee, actor-comedian Tommy Segura and many more hilarious stand-ups from the comfort of your camping chair at the Vancouver version of the Great Outdoors Comedy Festival. The adult-only Stanley Park event runs from September 13 to 15.

Special events and tours

First Nations culture
The Squamish Nation Youth Powow runs from July 5 to 7 on the Capilano Reserve in West Vancouver. The event includes dancing competitions, drumming and singing as well as a vendor market and a delicious salmon barbeque. Daily admission or a weekend pass are available, and admission is free for children and seniors.

Disney’s Frozen
Cool off this summer at a performance of the Tony-award nominated Broadway version of Disney’s Oscar-winning film. See Elsa, Olaf and Anna live on stage at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre from July 9 to 14. Tickets available now.

The Pacific National Exhibition
Attending the PNE has been a Vancouver end-of-summer tradition since 1910. And while many of the rides, midway games and exhibits have evolved with the times, much of the food has not! Indulge in popcorn, candy floss and those delicious mini donuts. Catch the SuperDogs, live music and even pig races! This year’s fair runs from August 17 to September 2.

The great outdoors

Kits street party
Head to West 4th Avenue in Kits on July 6 for the annual Khatsahlano Street Party. The 10-block street fair is the city’s largest free music and arts festival, featuring multiple stages, loads of food options, giveaways and special events. Mark your calendars and join the fun.

Fireworks festival
The Honda Celebration of Light is the longest running offshore fireworks competition in the world. This year’s international competitors include Portugal, Malaysia and the United Kingdom. Pack a blanket, find some friends or family and carve out a bit of grass or beach to watch the pyrotechnic extravaganza over English Bay on July 20, 24 and 27.

Bring your pride
Celebrate the city’s 2SLGBTQ+ in technicolor at the Vancouver Pride Parade on August 4 from noon to 3 pm. Expect about 150 innovative floats, including appearances by the Vancouver Police and Fire Departments, Dykes on Bikes and many of the West End bars and restaurants. The parade route runs from Denman and Davie – a short walk from Austeville’s Bayshore Outlook or Pacific Palisades – to just past BC Place.

Sporty pursuits

Bike race in the city
Stand roadside as some of the world’s best cyclists zip by you at speeds up to 50 km/hour on their quest to complete laps around Vancouver’s oldest neighbourhood and win the Gastown Grand Prix. This year’s event is free starts with the youth race at 5:30 pm on July 10. The pro women race at 6:15, followed by the men at 7:30.

Pick up a pickleball game
Have you joined the pickleball craze? If not, perhaps this is the summer to try. The fun and friendly racket game is great exercise and easy to learn – probably why it’s become North America’s fastest growing sport. Vancouver has a variety of indoor and outdoor options for people who want to find a court, take some lessons or join a league.

A day at the races
Grab your fascinator or best bow tie and head to Hastings Racecourse on July 20 for The Cup – an afternoon of thoroughbred horse racing, live music and great food. Billing itself as the “most stylish event of the summer” you’ll want to dress to impress, and don’t forget your lucky charm for those pony bets. Presale tickets start at $65.
